Background of the Study

Nursing students face unique academic stressors that can negatively impact their mental health, academic performance, and overall well-being. These stressors may include heavy workloads, time pressures, clinical placements, and the emotional challenges of patient care (Lee et al., 2025). Academic stress has been linked to burnout, anxiety, depression, and decreased academic performance among nursing students (Thomas et al., 2024).

At Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, nursing students experience a combination of academic and clinical stressors that require effective coping mechanisms. While nursing education provides essential knowledge and skills for future practice, it can also be emotionally and physically demanding. Coping mechanisms such as social support, time management, and mindfulness practices have been shown to alleviate stress and promote better mental health and academic success among nursing students (Harrison et al., 2023). This study aims to evaluate the academic stressors that nursing students face and the coping strategies they employ to manage these challenges at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

Statement of the Problem

While academic stress is a known issue among nursing students, there is limited research focusing on the specific stressors faced by nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, and how they cope with these stressors. Understanding the sources of academic stress and the coping strategies employed by students is essential for developing support systems that can improve students’ mental health and academic success. Without such research, nursing students may continue to experience heightened stress without sufficient institutional support to address their needs.

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the academic stressors faced by nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

2. To evaluate the coping mechanisms employed by nursing students to manage academic stress.

3. To determine the relationship between academic stressors, coping strategies, and academic performance among nursing students.

Research Questions

1. What are the primary academic stressors faced by nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe?

2. What coping mechanisms do nursing students use to manage academic stress?

3. How do academic stressors and coping strategies relate to nursing students’ academic performance?

Research Hypotheses

1. Academic stressors negatively impact nursing students' academic performance at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe.

2. Coping mechanisms such as time management and social support reduce the negative effects of academic stress on nursing students’ well-being and academic performance.

3. There is a significant relationship between nursing students’ coping mechanisms and their academic performance in the face of academic stress.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on nursing students at Federal Teaching Hospital, Gombe, specifically examining the academic stressors they face and their coping strategies. The study's findings may not be applicable to other healthcare institutions or nursing schools with different academic and clinical environments. Limitations include potential self-report biases and the inability to account for all individual differences in coping mechanisms.
